Gazing at Destiny: A Musical Revelation
Creative Director : Azai Lui (Simon)
Listening to music is one thing, but to take the melodies caught by your ears and physically mold them into a visual landscape with your own hands—that belongs to an entirely different realm of spiritual resonance. In those days when we had next to nothing, the joy of creation was beautifully simple and the passion unadulterated. You threw your entire being into the marrow of the music until every breath you took carried its rhythm.
Prior to this definitive collaboration, my encounters with Beyond were limited to occasional, friendly nods at Tom Lee Music, the Fringe Club, or various casual music gatherings. It was only when we came together for the album Party of Destiny that I began frequenting their band room on a regular basis.
Back then, Photoshop was still two years away from being born. Any wild visual effect born in your imagination had to be wrestled into reality through sheer physical grit. The psychedelic backdrop behind the band members was something I spent an entire day painting by hand. During the shoot, the musicians and the setting had to be captured together in a single, definitive take, meaning every single placement for the effects had to be meticulously mapped out the exact moment the shutter clicked. This background symbolized a "street corner where destiny loses its direction," while the eye on the cover served as a metaphor for the irreversibility of fate—a reality that every soul must look straight in the eye and accept.
Throughout the production, I chewed over and completely digested every single track on the album, to the point where I could sing along with every lyric from the heart. I absolutely love creating visuals for music because it allows me to push my personal passion to its absolute closest alignment with the sound itself. It was far more than just a project; it felt as though, caught up in the sheer intensity of creation, my lens and their music had arrived at a beautifully profound resonance.
