Creative Ripples of the Golden Age
Film Title
Some cinema classics are never the product of meticulous calculation. Instead, they are happy accidents born from a creator's whimsical impulse colliding with time. You plant a small seed of humor in the moment, never imagining that decades later, it will grow into a defining landmark in the collective memory of audiences.
Looking back now at this vintage still weathered by the years, that image of the black trench coat paired with sunglasses was a highly contrasting look I designed for a young Stephen Chow during the filming of My Hero in 1990.
This is a visual memory inadvertently intertwined with a cinematic classic. The original design intention was purely to shape a mundane, everyday character—someone "obsessed with comic books and trying too hard to look cool"—thereby creating comedic tension.
Amusingly, time has proven to be the most peculiar developing fluid. Upon the film's release, this visual absurdity sparked an unexpected chemistry with Stephen Chow’s distinct performance style. Over the years, it transformed into a delightfully nostalgic motif in the collective memory of cinema. For me, this experience was more than an exercise in art direction; it was about living through and contributing to impromptu yet fascinating creative ripples during the golden age of Hong Kong cinema.
