Esquire -

Art direction by Azai Lui (Simon)

Luggage of the Mind
A vintage suitcase and old newspapers frame Hu Shi and Wang Tongzhao. The physical refraction casts an amber glow, sealing the weight of their historical journeys.

The Poet's Desk
A rotary phone and inkwells under a vivid violet glow. The portraits fade and blur at the edges, emerging like spectral memories from an old desk.

Glass and Fleeting Years
Emerald light and glass bottles refract over the portraits. These unique film textures turn the page into a cool, experimental space.

Time Scratches
Xiao Qian and Dai Wangshu caught in warm wood and leather tones. The sharp, physical scratches act like markings of fate, anchoring their life stories deep inside the study.

Defiance and the Pocket Watch
Portraits paired with an open pocket watch encasing Lu Xun. Covered in raw, hand-crafted scratches, it captures the intense defiance of these literary giants.

English Version:
Whenever I see the younger generation effortlessly conjuring visual effects on Photoshop, my mind drifts back to an era when we had nothing, yet dared to try everything. Back then, there was no precise preview, no second chances. Every click of the shutter was a high-stakes gamble between flesh and matter.

The literary feature I created for the launch issue of Esquire (Chinese edition) was, to me, precisely that kind of purely raw and unrepeatable visual experiment.

To seek visual inspiration, I walked through the neighborhoods of Central and Sheung Wan along Hollywood Road, weaving through countless antique shops and old bookstalls. The weathered leather suitcases, vintage rotary phones, dried inkwells, eyeglasses, and metallic pocket watches were all physical props I scouted by hand. I arranged the master writers' portraits alongside these time-worn antiques, using light and color to construct a dialogue between the study and the soul before the lens.

Yet, the core challenge lay in the visual distortions—effects that might appear as "post-processing" today.

In the days of film, every effect was a one-shot deal; there was no turning back. I took the bold step of pre-arranging a thin sheet of transparent film directly inside the holder of a 4x5 large-format camera, right where the exposure happens, manually etching scratches and weathered traces onto it. The moment the shutter clicked and light pierced through this physical medium, the portraits of the masters and the antique props collided on film in completely unpredictable ways.

Without a computer screen for a precise preview, every single shot was a high-stakes gamble against light and matter. The raw scratches, bleeding edges, and surreal overlaps you see were all unique miracles—struck into existence at the exact moment of exposure through the collision of body and physical medium.

Modern audiences are accustomed to digital perfection and replication. What this series records is precisely the ultimate, decisive, and uncompromising physical experimentation of that handcrafted era.
